A full-sized semi-truck mounted high above a roadside inn sign in Nevada

What Stayed With Me

The Truck Inn

Sometimes a place earns our admiration one unexpected stop at a time.

Our destination was not Nevada itself. It was a meeting point.

My partner and I were driving to Elko, where we would meet her parents after they had traveled west from Denver. We had not planned much beyond where we would eventually arrive.

To be honest, I was not sure what to expect from Nevada. Crossing over from California felt like entering an entirely different rhythm. The highway stretched toward the horizon with long intervals between towns, carrying an almost constant stream of semi-trucks through landscapes that seemed rugged, open, and endlessly patient. At first glance, it felt stark.

But mile after mile, something began to change. The openness stopped feeling empty. It began to feel honest.

Then, somewhere along that long ribbon of highway, I saw a full-sized semi-truck suspended impossibly high above the road.

I laughed. Who decides to lift an entire truck into the air and use it to call attention to an inn?

It was clearly meant to catch the eyes of truck drivers traveling the route. It caught mine too. I pulled over because I knew I might never see anything quite like it again.

Some photographs preserve beauty. Others preserve delight.

What Stayed With Me

Nevada taught me something I had not expected: first impressions are rarely the whole story.

What initially felt empty slowly revealed its own character—its working landscapes, long horizons, and the quiet creativity of the people who call it home.

Sometimes one wonderfully unexpected roadside stop is enough to remind us that every place has its own sense of humor.

What place surprised you after you gave it more time than your first impression allowed?
